Travelling to Cary, North Carolina. I showed three pictures today because I loved them all. So happy to be able to travel again! All the images are from my iPhone and experimental!
This is a throwback from 2011 when I had just moved to London for a couple of years.
Disruption in the 365 project due to unexpected surgery and two weeks in the hospital. I worked around it as I could, and now am back home and taking pictures.
Morning view, on a record cold Boston morning the clouds were floating through the sky like smoke and the sun had risen behind the buildings.
You can tell a lot from a person from the back. This collection of drawings was painted on my iPhone from life or reference photos.
It seems I am always waiting for something or someone. This series started when I took a picture of a friend’s daughter who was modeling for me. My friend was teaching me how to set up lights, and we were waiting for him to finish. She was restless in her chair, and before the lights were ready I took some grainy poorly lit pictures of her shifting positions in the chair. The naturalness of the poses were not replicated by the later well lit photos. But they served as a jumping off place as I explored how our postures reveal the different emotions we have as we wait. When I was out and about I took snapshots of people waiting, which I later used as a references for new images. During the pandemic year, while we are all waiting for it to end, I have taken self portraits to use, combining them with the spaces and concerns of pandemic life.
Sometimes I find that the whole story is told by pattern and form. This is when I go to black & white. I have a passion for strong contrast and flowing forms, and enjoy creating strong somewhat abstract images when using black & white.
This last year I have taken advantage of all the time at home to bring order to my photo storage and taking classes in editing TAW files. One of the great pleasures has been reliving past trips and bringing the images to life. I skip around in my files a bit randomly. These are some of my favorites.
London
I go back and forth between drawing and taking photographs. Each reveals something different. I am playing with the tilt of the land, the colors of the season. The drawings may come from photographic reference or from life. They are all drawn on my iPad and iPhone.
So many losses and stresses this summer. Patience is key. Hope comes in the form of a butterfly.
I have two collies and every day we go for a walk. For many years, I attempted to take pictures of the landscape without the dogs in it. They are always stepping into my pictures and conversely refusing to cooperate when I want to take a picture of them! Over the years I realize that the best pictures are the ones where they are part of the landscape, because that is the landscape I see.
The strange and wild beauty of the meeting of ice, water and sky — colors and form morphing with changes in light and temperature. Cold, lonely scenes of dramatic change. The hugeness revealed in my small scale: the accumulation of many moments across days and months of walking the same beach at the same time. Like the three blind men describing the different parts of the elephant, I described different parts of the winter, in the small bits that I saw and felt each day. Bits come together to create the whole, my winter, here, on Cape Cod.
I took an abstract photo walk in New York City last winter. I like to set a specific quest for photo walks, choosing a camera or a lens, a color, or a subject. Abstracts are a favorite topic, leading to many architectural pictures, but I was looking for something new. I found it with a torn scrap of yellow paper on a lamppost. The fragment looked like a crest, the shape was interesting, the contrast and color exciting. I snapped the photo, then started noticing more complex layers of notices, posters, stickers, graffiti.
At first I was taken by their graphic qualities. My job was to create a composition. Later, in examining my bounty of photos, I saw something else. The random elements connected and formed loose stories and association: meaning. In real life, these odd pieces of poster and sticker, torn layers, the texture of the wall or post, were given their current relationship only by my choosing to contain them in a frame together. One photo of a wall of elements could convey a very different story than another photo of the same wall (See Sara and Amuse Bouche). Visually, the simple abstracts with bold colors and form were changed by the bits of figures and text into commentaries on the passage of time and the manners and concerns of that place in those times.
These images are taken in several places now: New York, Madrid, Granada and Paris.
I have passed this first picture, NOTice Art, hundreds of times driving on Cape Cod. One day, while thinking about a name for this series, I was idling at the stop light next to this sign, and there it was! Perfect.
